Magpul Carbine Stocks
Magpul have won a great reputation for their AR series accesspries. Their range of M16 series accessories has won many accolades and their mags have just been made general issue in the British Army. Many servicemen and women, law enforcement and correctional officers and sports shooters opt to change the stocks on their AR15 platform firearms and thousands opt for Magpul stocks on rifles and carbines that they have built for them or build themselves.
The most basic stock in the Magpul range is the MOE stock or 'Magpul Original Equipment'. This is an entry level, but robust stock that offers a better cheek weld than the standard military unit. Sling placement options include four slits for the standard width military sling and an eye to tie a paracord sling onto. The stock has an inherently strong A-frame construction surrounded by tough, heat resistant polycarbonate. This stock will not auto-collapse as it has a very strong release and locking mechanism which uses a high quality stainless steel spring. The release lever is tucked away under the comb of the stock to protect it from accidental actuation.
The contours have been kept smooth to avoid catching on equipment etc. Three different lengths of rubber butt pad are are available, the milspec units coming with 30mm pads and the commercial spec. with 55mm - a 70mm is an option. You can fit any of three heights of comb raiser, but these will restrict the AR15 to firing with the stock fully open and are intended for other platforms.
The next model up in the range is the Magpul CTR stock or 'Compact/Restricted Tactical'. This is similar to the MOE but with enhanced rigidity due to an ingenious friction locking mechanism. It also has the addition of a push fit QD sling swivel mount. You need to check your weapon's buffer tube diameter - milspec models fit military 1.14" OD buffer tubes and commercial models civilian 1.17" buffer tubes. Both are available in Black, Dark Earth, Foliage Green and OD Green to blend in to different terrain and vegetation types. These two stocks are really drop-in units which you can add to a service rifle in the US military on operations without being court martialled - this is not true of their next stock, the UBR or 'Utility Battle Rifle'.
The UBR stock is a big jump up in versatility offering a pre-selected pull out position implemented from seven by positioning a set screw. This stock has two push-button QD swivel mounting points that you can change from side to side, but ambidextrous versions are an option. A non-moving cheekpiece ensures completely consistent cheek-weld. The Magpul UBR is built to take the recoil of larger calibres shot off the AR15 platform and provides additional counterweight of 1.63lb to the heavy, bull barrels found on these and other sniper platforms and for carbines fitted with heavy accessories toward the front.
A locking box is included that fits into the triangle in the middle of the stock. This gives you the option of packing a bore-snake etc. It detaches, enabling you to achieve the 'skeletonized' look for your weapon. Smooth lines and the recessed lever prevent fouling or accidental operation. The internal parts are protected from dirt and sand ingress by the multi-layer construction. Military users will be disappointed that the use of an entry length receiver extension will prevent them from adding this stock to their issue rifle. It also requires an M4 buffer and spring to fit (not included) in an AR platform and some .308 ARs may require a shorter custom buffer and buffer spring.
These stocks are intended for general purpose use on AR series rifles, but can be fitted to any weapon which allows their use, including (in the case of the MOE and CTR) bolt action rifles from Remington and Howa and shotguns. There are also sniper/designated marksman specific stocks in Magpul's range which I hope to cover in another article.

welding stainless steel with flux core?
I have a job to do today........theres a museum in my town that has a kitchen in it, and i have to weld some sort of hooks on to the stainless steel stove/grill area. im not sure exactly what sort of material i should use for the hooks. iive got a small lincoln 3500 hd with flux in it right now. i dont have the gas for MIG. anyone got any ideas?
Heliarc TIG. I'd use an autogenous weld and leave the flux core at home. But, that's me. I guess you could do plasma arc, but I doubt you have the equipment for it.
