All of the Keurig single cup coffee makers use K-Cups, which contain vacuum packed portions of coffee, perfect for one cup. K-Cups were developed and patented for use with the Keurig brewing system and they are similar in appearance to coffee creamers. Each K-Cup is actually a mini-brewing system as it contains a freshly ground portion of coffee with a tiny filter. To remove any oxygen each Kcup is passed through a nitrogen fulsh after packaging. Each run is checked to be certain that there is no more than 2% oxygen in the K-Cups to ensure freshness. Then each is sealed with a foil lid, locking in flavor and sealing out oxygen, humidity, and light. A "Use By" date is stamped on each Kcup to let you know just how fresh they are.
