The Cause of Acid Reflux
What causes GERD? I'll answer that question in a moment, but firstlet’s look at how things are supposed to work.
First, consider that the main purpose of the esophagus is simply to carry what we eat to our stomach. It doesn’t aid in the digestive process directly.
The stomach is another case altogether. It has several different functions. The important point to emphasize here is that it is normal for the stomach to contain acid. When we eat, it's a signal for the stomach to produce even more acid.
The lining of the stomach is designed to handle the acid it contains without any difficulty. Problems can come up because other segments of the digestive tract, including the esophagus, aren’t. If the esophagus is exposed to acid, it gets a chemical burn, similar to what would happen if you spilled acid on your skin.
Reflux means to back up, so acid reflux means stomach {content, which is acidic,acid} backs up from the stomach into the esophagus.
What would cause that to happen?
The esophagus is a muscular tube. When you swallow, the muscles contract to propel the food to the stomach. At the very end of the esophagus, there’s a short segmentthat of esophagus that has a significantly higher pressure than the rest of the esophagus. This is called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) and acts like a valve.
When everything is working right, the LES eases up as food passes, and then tightens again to prevent the gastric content from refluxing into the esophagus.
However, the lower esophageal sphincter can be disrupted. What causes acid reflux is therefore anything that might cause the acid from the stomach to back up into the esophagus.
Some things that can disrupt the normal state of affairs are an hiatal hernia or obesity. Obesity increases the pressure in the stomach and overwhelms the ability of the sphincter to prevent reflux. Eating a very large meal can overwhelm the LES as well.

what is the purpose of the heater control valve?
I have a 1990 Dodge van that has a heater control valve in the heater core line. It restricts the water flow to the heater core. Does anyone know the purpose of this valve?
It regulates the flow of water entering the heater core which allows you adjust the heat in the cabin.
