Planers & Thicknessers Create Level Surfaces - ToolsRUs
Planers and thicknessers have been used for centuries to smooth the surface of wood. Planers and thicknessers are available in both electric or manual models. Electric power models are available in both portable and table units. Home improvement and building projects benefit from these tools.
Manual Planers & Thicknessers
For decades manual planers and thicknessers have been used for a variety of projects. Planers are made to shear off small amounts of wood when the piece of wood is dragged across the blade on the planer. There are also planers designed for fine work that use steel mesh screens to abrade the piece of wood instead of shaving it.

Table planers and thicknessers come in two main designs. With a table model you can feed the wood through and then flip it to feed through planing the other side. Exact dimensions can be acquired with the use of guiding fences on a large planer. Adjustments can be made for large pieces for precise results.
Portable Planers & Thicknessers
To give wood a smooth surface planers and thicknessers have been used for generations. Planers and thicknessers are available in both electric or manual models. Portable and table models are available with electric power. These tools can be used on a variety of different home improvement and building projects.
There are two basic models of portable planers and thicknessers. Large portable models can be attached to a truck or work table and handle wood up to 350mm. These are roughly half the size of a standard commercial planer and thicknesser.
Proper Usage of Planers & Thicknessers
When using planers and thicknessers protect your hands from splinters with lightweight leather gloves. Use a pusher board to keep your fingers away from the tool blades as you push your boards through the tool.
Rotozip vs. Jigsaw for cutting MDF board?
I need to cut a 1ft x 1ft square hole out from a 1/2 inch thick MDF board. I've used a hand held jig saw and it works pretty well but I was wondering if the Rotozip can do it any faster in comparison since it uses a rotating cutting bit instead of a straight blade. Also, which cuts cleaner? The jigsaw always leaves strands. Thanks guys.
