Tips To Maintain Your Paving
If your paving is covered in oil, filth and muck with a couple of undesirable weeds in-between, it's almost guaranteed that you have been neglecting your pavement totally! We've had tenants in our home for the past 24 months and we went to take a look at the house over this weekend. To put it gently, the home is in a horrible condition! Sure, we should have checked up on the tenants more often, but we trusted our rental agent with this task.
We once had a neat and welcoming entrance when we handed the house over to the tenants - this driveway is now covered in shades of green and black and it's barely possible to see the paving under all the weeds and dirt! Needless to say we are not amused with the scenario, but it's time to cut our losses and move on.
At times a garden hose and a broom would be able to do the trick, but in our example, it has unfortunately gone way too far for that! Luckily we have a high pressure hose in our garage area, so this should be able to eradicate most of the dirt and grime that has accumulated over the past 24 months. A tough garden sweeper might be needed to get rid of some of the tougher stains. Then we would also need to invest in a chemical or a type of stripper to eliminate the oil stains on the paving! I have a funny hunch that our tenants had a backyard garage at our property as
I cannot think how else a private drive would end up resembling the interior of a dirty workshop!
To avoid being in a similar scenario again down the road, we will purchase a proper sealer and seal the paving once it's adequately washed. Sealants are a way to safeguard your paving from staining and it will also reduce the risk of algae to grow on the surface and cause discolouring. There are numerous kinds of sealant available and it is therefore important to choose the proper sealer to do the job. The thing that I do not want is a sparkly pavement! That never looks normal and it gives the impression that your paving has been varnished instead of sealed!
Some of our paving is a bit more porous than other, so we will have to pay special attention to getting the appropriate sealers for the correct areas. As far as I am aware an effective sealant will protect the paving for anything between 2 and 5 years - that sounds good to me!
One other good plan to make sure that your pavement lasts as long as your home, is to replace any broken or cracked pieces as soon as possible. A small crack can quickly spread when left unwatched and your pricey paving can quickly end up imitating a spiderweb!
If you are considering paving your entrance, make certain you use a trustworthy company with experience in the field - this will prevent a lot of severe headaches later on!
