I am looking for a western saddle to fit a short, flat backed and mutton withered Fjord mare.?
Like I said I am looking for a western saddle to fit my hard to fit mare.
She is 13.3 and 1300 pounds. Norwegian Fjord.
She is short backed, flat and mutton wirthed.
I am interested in a flex or draft saddle. I don't like treeless saddle. I don't feel comfortable in them, as I trail ride mainly.
Two suggestions:
Tucker makes trail saddles that can be purchased in wide and even extra wides. They also make "short skirted" saddles which truthfully are pretty much "no rear skirt". The Tucker brand got it's start making saddles primarily for gaited horses used for trail riding. The bars of the tree flare outward at the front which allows deeper shoulder action. Many gaited horses are short backed and/or have deep rear action which requires as little skirt as possible in the back to allow comfort during their gait. I'd suggest that to you first.
Second, my mare was fairly mutton withered when younger - really strange, like someone put two ice cream scoops of muscle on her shoulders. I tried many different barrel saddles on her and finally found one that fit perfectly. The saddle I bought is made by Crates and it's called, let me see if I can get this right... a Freedom Saddle - it's designed by Meleta Brown. This particular saddle also has a flared front end to the trees and a twist to the bars so as the tree goes along the back, it flattens out - almost flat - to allow a barrel horse to turn tightly without pinching the skirts into it's flanks. If you contact Meleta Brown, she's in Indiana, she'll set you up with a trial saddle. she's got two of them that simply are shipped someplace, tried out and shipped to the next place. The cost of receiving the saddle is the cost to ship it to the next person. talk to Meleta about the tree width and she'll help you out with whether what she's got will be good for you or not.
I believe 100% in both of these saddles. I sell Tuckers and I know they're a cadillac of trail saddles - they hold their value very well if they are cared for well. We have people bring in used ones when they sell horses and the longest I've seen one in the shop is about 2 months. they sell often for the same price as original.
I personally bought the Crates Meleta Brown saddle because I wanted a barrel saddle, not a trail saddle and because I could get that trial saddle to actually try out. However, a word to the wise, if you do that, inspect the saddle carefully when you receive it. When I got the trial saddle, one of the blevins buckles was broke and then it looked strange - the skirts were sewed on incorrectly under the bars. It turns out the person who had it before me tore it apart, copied it and tried to put it back together and did so incorrectly.
