Top ten green cleaning tips
Instead of spending a small fortune on household cleaning products, why not use what's already sitting in your store cupboards instead? It'll save you money and it's kinder to the environment too. Here's my top ten tips for cleaning your home using just lemons, salt, bicarbonate of soda and vinegar:
1. The easiest – and nicest smelling – way to clean your microwave is to cut a lemon in half and squeeze both halves into a pyrex jug half full of warm water. Pop in the microwave on max power for about five minutes. The steam will lift the dirt from the inside making it really easy to wipe clean.
2. You can also use lemon juice to clean the sinks, taps and surfaces in your kitchen and bathroom. Simply make up a paste of bicarbonate of soda, lemon juice and warm water and then use a cloth to scrub away limescale and finally rinse with clean water.
3. A quick way to get your stainless steel taps looking shiny is to cut a lemon in half and rub over the taps to remove any limescale. Then rinse with clean warm water to remove any stickiness.
4. Put the other half a lemon in a saucer of water and place in the fridge to help remove bad smells.
5. Use bicarbonate of soda to unclog and deodorise a slow draining plughole. Pour four or five tablespoons of powder down the sink, then add the same amount of white vinegar and put the plug in. Wait a few minutes for it to fizz away and then run the taps to flush it through.
6. You can also use bicarbonate of soda to deodorize your cupboards or even your dishwasher, if it tends to get a bit whiffy between washers. Just remove the lid from a tub of bicarb and place in the cupboard or dishwasher and it'll work by absorbing and neutralising any odours.
7. White vinegar is handy for giving your iron a spring clean and prevent it from clogging up with limescale. Fill up the water compartment with a solution of white vinegar and equal parts water. Leave for a couple of hours and then rinse well with clean water. Any burnt marks on the plate of the iron can be removed by rubbing with a damp cloth while the iron is still warm. If that won't shift the marks, try rubbing gently with a paste made of bicarbonate of soda and a little water.
8. The best window cleaner is also the cheapest – white vinegar and old newspaper! Dilute 1 part vinegar to 3 parts water and use a soft cloth to wipe your windows. You could also apply the solution using a spray bottle, but you should always ensure the bottle is washed thoroughly and left empty after use, so it doesn't develop a smell. Then buff your windows using good old fashioned black and white newspaper, to leave them looking shiny and streak free.
9. Instead of buying expensive brass cleaner to polish your brass ornaments, you can save money by using lemon juice and salt instead. Simply squeeze the juice from a lemon and add a couple of teaspoons of salt, then apply to the brass using a cloth. Rinse well with warm water then buff up using a soft dry cloth.
10. To clean your silver items, simple line a kitchen pan with aluminium foil and then boil them in water that's had a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda and a teaspoon of salt added to it.
